A crew without a truck is the cheapest way to move a household and the easiest way to lose the protection a regulated move carries. Both halves of that sentence matter.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (919) 913-6126North Carolina regulates the transportation of household goods within the state. A mover needs a certificate from the Utilities Commission under Commission Rule R2-37 and must bill under Maximum Rate Tariff No. 2, and it must provide potential customers the booklet titled Moving in North Carolina, Your Rights and Responsibilities. A labor-only job, where you rent and drive the vehicle and the crew loads it, is not transportation for hire, so the tariff's rate ceilings and its valuation framework do not govern the transaction. The rate is contractual. The liability is contractual. This can be a perfectly good trade for the price difference, but the protection has to be read rather than assumed, and the one question worth asking directly is what the provider's coverage says about damage to the goods, to the rented truck and to the building.
The tariff's labor item is the best published reference in this state. Item 4 sets labor charges at $41.85 per crew member per hour during regular hours, meaning 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday excluding legal holidays, and $51.40 per crew member per hour outside those hours or at any hour on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday. Those are maximums for a regulated carrier's labor, and they are the natural benchmark for what a labor-only crew hour should cost. The same item is what applies when a carrier does work the tariff otherwise excludes, which is a useful signal about which parts of a move are considered labor rather than transportation.
Rule 41 puts a specific category of work on the shipper. Removal from or placement into attics, basements and other locations is the shipper's responsibility where the location is not accessible by a permanent stairway, and disappearing staircases and ladders of any type are explicitly excluded; where it is not adequately lighted; where there is no flat continuous floor; or where a person cannot stand erect. If a carrier agrees to work there anyway, Item 4 labor charges apply. On a labor-only job nobody is bound by that rule, which cuts both ways: a crew may agree to a low crawl space, and there is no published framework covering what happens if someone is hurt or something is broken doing it. Decide it explicitly and in writing.
A rental box has a smooth floor, limited tie points and no logistics track in the common sizes, so the method changes. Build complete floor-to-ceiling tiers from the front wall back, finishing each tier before starting the next, because a half-height tier collapses forward. Heaviest and most rectangular items go on the floor against the front wall. Mattresses and box springs stand upright along the side walls. Table tops, headboards and mirrors travel flat against a wall, never loose. Voids get filled with soft goods so nothing can shift, and each tier gets strapped at the truck's own rails. A properly tiered rental truck holds noticeably more than a stacked one, which matters when the alternative is a second trip.
Campus move-in schedules are the sharpest example of a fixed labor window in Raleigh. Shaw University's academic calendar sets new and transfer students reporting to campus on Friday, August 7, and move-in and clearance for returning students on August 10 through 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the calendar stating no weekend move-ins. That is a five-hour daily window on three weekdays. NC State University Housing scheduled fall 2026 move-in for August 13 through 15, with residents selecting a check-in appointment slot in the MyPack Portal. A labor-only crew has to be booked to a window that narrow, and there is no flexibility to push into the evening.
Three logistical items stop self-moves more often than the loading does. First, the parking: requests for parking passes for moving vans go to Raleigh Parking directly, downtown and Glenwood South meters run 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, the Hillsborough District runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and enforcement operates 24 hours every day. Second, the elevator: published guidance for one 23-floor downtown building of 352 units asks for a freight elevator reservation by phone at least 48 hours ahead and notes Saturday slots filling one to two weeks out. Third, the certificate of insurance that same guidance says the building requires, which a rental truck contract does not provide. Confirm all three before the crew is booked.
Labor-only is billed by the hour, so preparation is the discount. Have every carton sealed, labeled by destination room and stacked near the door before the crew arrives. Disassemble furniture in advance, or agree that the crew is doing it and bag the hardware to each frame. Lay floor runners and door protection. Park the truck as close as legally possible with the ramp down and the pass displayed. Have water available and start early, since Raleigh-Durham's normal daily high sits at or above 90 degrees from July 2 through July 27 and still reaches 89.7 on August 1. Two prepared hours at each end regularly removes an hour from the bill.

Call (919) 913-6126Three more Raleigh institutions crowd the same week: William Peace University welcomed new students Thursday, August 13, 2026, Meredith College set Move-In Day for Saturday, August 15, 2026, and Shaw University's calendar sets returning-student move-in August 10-12, 10am-3pm, with no weekend move-ins.
Why it matters: Crews, curb space and elevator slots citywide are committed in mid-August. A move in that window needs booking well ahead, or a different date.

Published move-in guidance for Skyhouse Raleigh, a downtown high-rise listed at 23 floors and 352 units, says the freight elevator is reserved by calling the concierge desk at least 48 hours ahead, Saturday slots fill one to two weeks out, move hours run 8am-5pm Monday through Saturday, a certificate of insurance is required, and the truck parks at a loading dock on Hillsborough St.
Why it matters: In a downtown mid-rise the building's reserved window, not crew availability, sets the schedule. This comes from a mover's building guide rather than the building's own policy, so confirm it directly.

Raleigh says a permit may be required for oversized equipment transport where, per NCDOT, width exceeds eight feet six inches, height exceeds thirteen feet six inches, a single vehicle is over 40 feet or a combination over 60 feet, or weight exceeds North Carolina's legal weight. Review involves the Police Department, Raleigh Parking, and the Traffic Signal Supervisor.
Why it matters: A crane, boom truck or trailered spa can trip those thresholds, and the review needs a route map plus an approved NCDOT permit. That lead time belongs in the schedule.
