Packing is priced apart from the move itself, container by container, and the state tariff publishes a ceiling for each carton and each hour of packing labor. Who packs a box also changes what a claim looks like months later.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (919) 913-6126Item 1 of the tariff sets maximum charges for packing and unpacking, and each figure covers the labor, the container and the materials together. A dish pack for kitchen glassware caps at $74.05. A three-cubic-foot carton caps at $22.25, a four-and-a-half at $26.65 and a six at $26.80. A wardrobe carton runs to $33.10, a king or queen mattress carton to $47.95, and a corrugated container for mirrors, glass or marble to $47.60. Custom crating is priced by volume at $26.95 per cubic foot with a minimum of $107.85 per crate. Because these are ceilings rather than list prices, an itemized packing estimate can be checked line by line against the published schedule.
Item 3 covers containers supplied without labor, and the gap between the two schedules is the real decision. The same three-cubic-foot carton is $7.05 empty, the four-and-a-half is $8.30 and the six is $9.45. A dish pack is $17.35, a wardrobe $22.50 and a king or queen mattress carton $26.40. Flat-screen television boxes are $66.50 under forty inches and $82.50 at forty inches or more. Unprinted newsprint is $1.90 a pound and two-inch plastic tape $7.20 a roll. Splitting the work is legitimate and common: hand over the kitchen, the artwork and the electronics, and box your own closets and linens.
Timing changes the rate structure. When packing happens incidentally during an hourly move, the tariff bills it at the hourly crew rate plus container charges from Item 3 rather than at the full packing rates. Packing performed on a separate earlier day falls under Item 1, or under Item 2 when it happens before 8 a.m., after 5 p.m., or at any hour on a weekend or holiday. On weight-and-distance moves there is a straight labor line as well: $41.85 per crew member per hour during regular hours and $51.40 outside them. Ask which of those applies to your scheduled day, because a Saturday pack and a Tuesday pack are not the same transaction.
A carton packed by the carrier and a carton packed by the household sit differently in a claim file. Owner-packed boxes invite an argument about whether the contents were adequately protected, so the more fragile the item, the stronger the case for professional packing and a written notation of it on the inventory. Either way the filing window is nine months from the point a reasonable time for delivery has passed. On an intrastate move the carrier owes an acknowledgment with claim procedures within fifteen days and a resolution within sixty. Photograph the inside of any box you pack yourself.
Recovery is bounded three different ways, and none of them tracks what you paid at retail. The unpriced default is sixty cents per pound for the damaged article, which the tariff illustrates with a fifty-pound television valued at thirty dollars. Anything worth more than a hundred dollars a pound is an article of extraordinary value and has to be listed in writing, or liability can be held to that per-pound figure. Ready-to-assemble particle-board furniture is capped at sixty cents a pound or fifty dollars per article, whichever is greater. Full value protection changes the calculation but excludes single articles or matched sets worth five thousand dollars or more unless they are disclosed.
Some categories never go on a household truck: fuels, propane, aerosols, ammunition, corrosives, paint thinner and anything else flammable or explosive. Perishable food, open liquids and live plants create their own problems on a summer haul. Appliances need servicing rather than packing, and a laden home freezer is handled as a specialty item at a capped charge of $93.30. Keep identification, medication, financial and medical records, keys, jewelry and small heirlooms with you in your own vehicle. Set aside a labeled first-night carton with bedding, tools, chargers and cleaning supplies so nobody has to open six boxes at midnight.
Order the work backward from the load. Storage rooms, books, artwork and out-of-season clothing come first, then the rooms you can live without, with the kitchen and bathrooms last. Reserve the coolest hours for the heaviest carries, since normal daily highs at Raleigh-Durham sit at or above ninety degrees for most of July. Label the top and two sides of every carton with its destination room, and mark fragile loads on the side that will face out on the truck. A crew arriving to sealed, labeled cartons loads faster and touches your belongings less.

Call (919) 913-6126Three more Raleigh institutions crowd the same week: William Peace University welcomed new students Thursday, August 13, 2026, Meredith College set Move-In Day for Saturday, August 15, 2026, and Shaw University's calendar sets returning-student move-in August 10-12, 10am-3pm, with no weekend move-ins.
Why it matters: Crews, curb space and elevator slots citywide are committed in mid-August. A move in that window needs booking well ahead, or a different date.

Published move-in guidance for Skyhouse Raleigh, a downtown high-rise listed at 23 floors and 352 units, says the freight elevator is reserved by calling the concierge desk at least 48 hours ahead, Saturday slots fill one to two weeks out, move hours run 8am-5pm Monday through Saturday, a certificate of insurance is required, and the truck parks at a loading dock on Hillsborough St.
Why it matters: In a downtown mid-rise the building's reserved window, not crew availability, sets the schedule. This comes from a mover's building guide rather than the building's own policy, so confirm it directly.

Raleigh says a permit may be required for oversized equipment transport where, per NCDOT, width exceeds eight feet six inches, height exceeds thirteen feet six inches, a single vehicle is over 40 feet or a combination over 60 feet, or weight exceeds North Carolina's legal weight. Review involves the Police Department, Raleigh Parking, and the Traffic Signal Supervisor.
Why it matters: A crane, boom truck or trailered spa can trip those thresholds, and the review needs a route map plus an approved NCDOT permit. That lead time belongs in the schedule.
