An apartment move answers to the building first. Elevator windows, the door a crew is allowed to use, the distance from truck to unit and downtown meter hours can all outrank the date printed on your lease.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (919) 913-6126Vertical access is priced, not absorbed. On weight-and-distance moves the tariff allows $3.10 per hundred pounds for elevator use at each end, and $2.20 per hundred pounds for each flight of stairs, inside or outside, at each end. On an hourly job the same obstacles appear as clock time instead. The tariff defines a flight as at least eight steps inside a building and treats an elevator as one flight. It caps the inside flight carry at $33.55 for the first flight and $16.85 for each one after, with an outside first flight at $32.15 and sixty cents per step beyond the counted range. None of this is negotiable in the abstract, which is exactly why the elevator reservation belongs in the plan before a start time is chosen.
Distance from the truck to the door is measured, not estimated. The tariff treats the first seventy-five feet between vehicle and residence entrance as included, then charges an extra carry for each additional fifty feet or fraction of it at $2.20 per hundred pounds. In practice that turns a garden-style complex where the truck stops at a shared bay into a materially different job from a unit twenty feet off a service door. Walk the actual route and count it before booking. A crew that knows about a two-hundred-foot push across a courtyard brings dollies and a second body for it.
Payment at Raleigh meters is required from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday in downtown districts including Glenwood South, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hillsborough district near the university. Weekends are free. Enforcement, though, runs twenty-four hours every day, so a bagged or restricted space stays restricted at 7 a.m. on a Sunday. A meter or time-zone violation costs twenty dollars, doubling with a late fee if it sits unpaid for twenty-one days. Parking passes for moving vans come from Raleigh Parking at 310 W. Martin Street, Suite 109, and construction-style permits are priced by the number of days requested times the daily rate of each space held.
Several neighborhoods near downtown and the university run residential permit programs, where a permit costs thirty dollars per cycle, guest passes cover a single twenty-four-hour period and restrictions commonly apply from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Restrictions differ block by block, so the answer for one street tells you nothing about the next. Occupying a lane, a sidewalk or the sidewalk shoulder is a separate matter that requires a right-of-way permit through the city's development portal, along with a traffic control plan when a lane or the full street is involved. Most apartment moves need none of that. The ones that do are usually the ones nobody checked.
The state's 120 percent ceiling on billed charges above an estimate carries two exceptions that catch studio and one-bedroom moves in particular. It does not apply when the shipment weighs less than a thousand pounds, and it does not apply when the estimate is requested fewer than five business days before the move. A lightly furnished apartment can easily sit under that weight threshold. If yours might, ask for a binding guaranteed price instead of relying on a percentage cap that will not cover you, and book far enough ahead that the five-day exception never comes into play.
University housing does not open its doors to whoever arrives first. NC State's fall 2026 residence hall move-in runs August 13 through 15 with residents selecting check-in appointments, which fixes both the arrival window and how long a vehicle can sit at the curb. That single week also tightens truck availability across the market, since off-campus leases in the same corridor turn over alongside it. Confirm whether the destination is university housing or a private building, then hand the crew the appointment time rather than a vague morning.
Apartments hold a lot of ready-to-assemble furniture, and North Carolina prices that reality honestly. Liability on particle-board and knock-down pieces is capped at sixty cents a pound or fifty dollars per article, whichever is greater, whatever coverage was elected. The general default is the same sixty cents per pound the tariff applies to any released shipment. Full value protection changes the arithmetic, and a carrier that never obtained a signature in the valuation section leaves the shipment deemed released to coverage of up to fifteen thousand dollars at no charge. Photograph assembled pieces before disassembly, and keep hardware bagged and taped to the frame it came from.

Call (919) 913-6126NC State University Housing scheduled its fall 2026 move-in operation for August 13–15 and tells residents to select a move-in appointment time slot.
Why it matters: A move to university housing has a defined arrival window instead of open-ended curb access. The crew, vehicle, inventory, and building access need to be matched to the assigned appointment before the job is scheduled.

Three more Raleigh institutions crowd the same week: William Peace University welcomed new students Thursday, August 13, 2026, Meredith College set Move-In Day for Saturday, August 15, 2026, and Shaw University's calendar sets returning-student move-in August 10-12, 10am-3pm, with no weekend move-ins.
Why it matters: Crews, curb space and elevator slots citywide are committed in mid-August. A move in that window needs booking well ahead, or a different date.

Published move-in guidance for Skyhouse Raleigh, a downtown high-rise listed at 23 floors and 352 units, says the freight elevator is reserved by calling the concierge desk at least 48 hours ahead, Saturday slots fill one to two weeks out, move hours run 8am-5pm Monday through Saturday, a certificate of insurance is required, and the truck parks at a loading dock on Hillsborough St.
Why it matters: In a downtown mid-rise the building's reserved window, not crew availability, sets the schedule. This comes from a mover's building guide rather than the building's own policy, so confirm it directly.
