One heavy piece is not a small move. It is a short move with all the same access problems and a different set of tariff charges, and shipments under a thousand pounds lose one protection outright.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (919) 913-6126Rule 13 caps final billed charges at 120 percent of the estimated amount, with any excess requiring a signed change order. It then excludes two situations, and one of them is a shipment weighing less than 1,000 pounds. A sectional sofa, a treadmill, a china cabinet or a single armoire almost always sits under that weight, so the percentage guardrail is not available for a one-item job. What replaces it is specificity. Get the charge structure in writing: hourly with a stated minimum, or a flat item charge, plus any stair and access charges named separately. The tariff still limits the maximums under Rule 2, so the figures below are ceilings you can check a quote against.
The tariff's bulky article item names a surprising number of household pieces and prices loading and unloading together, including the handling and blocking of the article. A television over 40 inches is $179.90. Home gym equipment, listed as electronic stairsteppers, tanning beds, Nordic tracks and Bowflexes, is $107.15. A satellite disc four feet or larger is $174.80. A motorcycle, go cart or riding mower under 25 horsepower is $107.15. A playhouse, tool shed or utility shed transported set up and over 100 cubic feet is $202.85. Anything else over 400 pounds that is not specifically named is $151.40. A separate item prices pianos and organs by height and a slate-top pool table at least 42 inches wide, 84 inches long and over 400 pounds at $128.25. If your piece is on that list, the ceiling is published.
Rule 35(B) removes from the tariff's ordinary services the handling, loading or unloading of any single article weighing 400 pounds or more. Above that weight the extra handling is furnished by the shipper, or by the carrier at the bulky article charges when it has the additional personnel and equipment available, and any bracing or blocking material that is not part of the vehicle's regular equipment must be furnished by the shipper. This is why a genuinely heavy single item is quoted as a small crew with equipment rather than as two people and a dolly. Weigh the assumption before the day: a solid-slate armoire, a full-size gun safe, a commercial treadmill and a laden chest freezer all clear that line more often than people expect.
Inside a building, the maximum flight carry is $33.55 for the first flight and $16.85 for each additional one, where the first flight means at least eight steps, additional flights are complete floors above or below, and an elevator counts as one flight. Outside a building the first flight is 8 but not more than 20 steps at $32.15, and each step past twenty adds sixty cents. Fewer than eight exterior steps is not a flight. Count both ends before quoting, because a single item that comes down one interior flight at origin and up six exterior steps at destination is two separate carry events.
A single-item move gets treated casually and that is where the ticket comes from. All downtown areas including Glenwood South require meter payment from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, the Hillsborough District near NC State requires payment from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and parking regulations are enforced 24 hours every day regardless of the payment window. A meter or time-zone violation is twenty dollars, with a twenty dollar late fee if it goes unpaid past 21 days, and Raleigh Parking field agents work downtown, the Hillsborough Street corridor and residential permit areas. Requests for parking passes for moving vans go to Raleigh Parking directly. Ten minutes of curb planning is cheaper than the fine and much cheaper than a long carry.
Access in Raleigh's inner neighborhoods is the whole difficulty on a one-item job. The Oakwood historic district was developed primarily during the fifty-year period from 1880 to 1930 and is described as Raleigh's only intact 19th century neighborhood, with larger two-story homes flanked by one-story cottages. Original stairs, original landings and original door openings were not sized for a modern sectional or a 75-inch television carton. Boylan Heights, laid out beginning in 1907, has typical lot frontages of 30 to 50 feet, an average lot depth of 130 feet, front setbacks of 15 to 30 feet, and a main street that runs in an S curve for six blocks. Measure the narrowest point on the path, not the widest, and measure the piece with its feet and its packaging on.
Measure the item in all three dimensions, then measure every door, turn, stair width and landing on the route at both addresses. Photograph the piece from four sides before it is wrapped, since a one-item claim rests entirely on origin condition. Remove doors, drawers, glass, legs and feet, and bag hardware taped to the frame. Pad first and wrap over the pads rather than wrapping directly onto a finished surface, which matters in a market where 33 stations recorded record-high average July dew points in 2025. Then decide, honestly, whether the piece fits. Knowing it does not is worth more than discovering it on the landing.

Call (919) 913-6126Raleigh Right-of-Way Services says parking passes for moving vans can be obtained directly from Raleigh Parking; for timed or paid spaces, the approved pass must be displayed while the space is occupied.
Why it matters: For downtown or other paid-curb moves, the truck location should be confirmed before moving day. It reduces the risk that a crew arrives without a legal place to stand or has to make a long carry from an available space.

NC State University Housing scheduled its fall 2026 move-in operation for August 13–15 and tells residents to select a move-in appointment time slot.
Why it matters: A move to university housing has a defined arrival window instead of open-ended curb access. The crew, vehicle, inventory, and building access need to be matched to the assigned appointment before the job is scheduled.

Three more Raleigh institutions crowd the same week: William Peace University welcomed new students Thursday, August 13, 2026, Meredith College set Move-In Day for Saturday, August 15, 2026, and Shaw University's calendar sets returning-student move-in August 10-12, 10am-3pm, with no weekend move-ins.
Why it matters: Crews, curb space and elevator slots citywide are committed in mid-August. A move in that window needs booking well ahead, or a different date.
